Original Outdoor Experience

Original Outdoor Experience

At Scout Adventures we believe that great school residentials give pupils the opportunity to learn tangible skills, work collaboratively, develop responsibility and break down barriers with teaching staff. We call this method adventure.

For over 110 years, The Scouts have been using adventure as a tool to develop young people. This school experience has been designed around that tried and tested model, using all of the experience we’ve gained along the way. Immersed in the natural surroundings of our adventure centres and with the guidance of our instructors, pupils will develop tangible skills that are useful in both the outdoors and, importantly, back in the classroom.

Our partners at Learning Away have shown that outdoor learning in this way has a direct impact on behaviour, collaborative working and attainment. Whether working as a team to cook a meal over an open fire, or reflecting on individual performance and adapting technique to score a bull’s eye in an archery session – this is the essence of what Scouting and school residentials are all about.

Our method

This school experience is delivered by our instructors with close support from school staff. In practice this might mean that an instructor teaches the group to light a fire, and teachers help to coach the group and provide pastoral support. There is no need for school staff to have outdoors skills themselves – just a willingness to get involved.

We believe this codelivery is an essential part of the residential experience – helping to build bonds between pupils and school staff, and letting teachers learn more about their pupils to help them back in the school environment.

We’ve strived to achieve a balance between engaging young people in challenging new experiences and providing a comfortable learning environment. While we provide comfortable mattresses, young people sleep in tents; this arrangement directly connects pupils with the adventurous spirit of the residential.

Likewise this school experience is fully catered, however students will cook at least one meal themselves. This adds context and relevance to skills such as fire lighting.

The course helps develop skills for life that pupils can apply at home, and encourages an inquisitive approach to problem solving. Exact activities vary by location, so please contact us for more details.

Our minimum group size for this school experience is 20. If you’ve got a smaller group, please do get in touch and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

"We loved the Tented Village - we were only staying one night, and it was blissful not to have to put tents up, or take them down the next morning."

A night under the stars

You’ll stay in our Tented Village for a stay away from home your group will never forget. To make it easy, our Tented Villages are already built for you and include:

  • Tents with comfy mattress pads
  • A group marquee with seating, electric and lighting
  • A basic camp kitchen for that all-important evening hot chocolate

It's usually about 4 - 5 young people to a tent, with separate tents for adults in your group. Don't worry - a clean toilet block and hot shower is never far away!

Let the adventure begin

No two visits to Scout Adventures look the same, because we’ll work with you to create an activity programme that suits your group and objectives.

Built on 115 years experience of outdoor learning, this immersive residential focuses on developing skills for life. You’ll take part in a programme of 3 hour sessions that are built on learning by doing and progression. For example:

  • Build confidence by reaching the top of the climbing wall
  • Learn independence and leadership with orienteering
  • Improve teamwork to build a bushcraft shelter
  • Develop planning and problem-solving in raft building

Most overnight groups arrive mid-morning to settle in (don’t forget to bring your own packed lunch or book an extra meal with us!) before meeting their programme leader.

You’ll check into your accommodation after your first afternoon of activities with us, with time to unpack your sleeping bag before dinner. Your programme will finish at lunchtime on your final day, when you’ll check-out of your accommodation too. You’ll have a final lunch which you can eat on-site, or takeaway for the journey home.
