Mountain Leader Training

For those at the top of their game, we provide the nationally recognised Mountain Leader qualification. If you love leading people in the outdoors and want the option to use your qualifications outside of Scouts then the ML is for you. Yr Hafod is a registered provider of Mountain Training courses and offers nationally recognised courses to complement our Scout adventurous activities training. Mountain Training and the Scouts have been working together for decades thanks to our shared interest in walking, climbing, and mountaineering. We run our Mountain Leader as a sandwich course over a series of weekends to make them more accessible to volunteers. Before you book, please make sure you have attained the minimum number of 20 Quality Mountain Days (QMDs) and have them logged on Mountain Training’s DLog (digital logbook). For more details on the Mountain Leader scheme visit the Mountain Training site. Our courses are split over three weekends to make them more accessible to volunteers and run from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. You must attend all three weekends to complete the course. Food and accommodation is included.

Nights Away Weekender

Calling all nights away assessors, permit holders and anyone wanting to be one. Gather round the campfire and join us for the Nights Away Weekender 2026: a two-night skills fest just for you. This weekend of adventure will be packed full of workshops and practical skills for great residentials. Think programme planning, fires, outdoor cooking, equipment care and camp gadgets. This is a hands-on weekend. Prepare for mud!

Our tailored sessions mean it doesn’t matter whether you’re an old-hand or just starting out. We’ll pitch our sessions to your level. It’ll also be a great opportunity to meet other volunteers, so you’ll be in good company. You’ll join us at our nights away marketplace. Not only will we have all the gear on show, you’ll be able to swap ideas and advice too. You’ll leave confident to deliver great overnight experiences for young people.
