Great Tower and the Lake District
Great Tower is one of 5 activity centres in England run by the Scout Association. These centres are collectively known as Scout Adventures. The site is approximately 250 acres of ancient oak wood, and rocky crags. We offer adventurous activities to Scout, Guide, School and Youth Groups working with young people of all ages.
Set in the heart of the Lake District, on the shores of Windermere, Great Tower is one of the most stunning locations you could hope for to complete your residential. Perfect for hiking, paddling and climbing as well as being in England’s largest National Park. The Lake District is home to Scafell Pike (England’s highest Mountain), Wast Water (England’s deepest Lake) and thriving communities like Keswick and Ambleside.
Like all Scout Adventures sites the majority of our team are volunteers. Supported each year by a small team of permanent staff, ten to fifteen residential volunteers travel from around the world to live in this amazing corner of England for a placement of 6 to 12 months and learn how to instruct adventurous activities to young people. Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do and how we do it - and as a member of our Summer Squad you'll get the chance to experience the magic they bring to Great Tower. You never know it might even make you want to come back as a residential volunteer yourself!
