Being a Senior

What Skills, abilities and values do I need to be a senior?

To be a senior you will need:

  • The ability to deliver training and activities to both our volunteers and our broad range of guests.

  • Ability to supervise volunteers including appropriate delegation, encouraging personal development and managing performance.

  • Care about outdoor education and understand how it can change the lives of young people.

  • Able to adapt to changing situations, communicate, cooperate with and respect others in the team.

  • Want to do a good job every time and want to do the right thing even when it’s not easy to do.

  • Be confident operating in a high pressure environment.

  • Good communicator.

  • Ability to work well in a mixed team of volunteers and staff.

  • Great time management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks.

Option 1: What does a Customer Experience Senior Volunteer do?

The role of a senior volunteer involves supporting the day to day leadership of Scout Adventures by acting as a team leader, duty manager and mentor. Our senior volunteers are also key in supporting volunteers taking part in our volunteering programme by organising socials, monitoring welfare needs, offering advice as required and leading them in their day to day volunteering. 

This year we will be offering two different roles this year as part of the program, this is to help build the most effective teams, and ensure the senior volunteers are focusing and developing their skills as much as possible.

Your role will be made up of CORE TASKS plus the tasks for the CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE role;

Core tasks:

- Act as a Duty Manager on a rota basis; including managing the site team and any service crews.

- Work as a team leader, supporting our volunteers.

- Support volunteers to complete the Scout Adventures Badge programme

- Support other Scout Adventures locations as required.

- Act as a role model (even during none working hours) to inspire others and share your volunteering experience.

- Take on responsibilities and roles during events.

- Deliver training to volunteers.

- Working towards your own personal objectives - developing new skills that will help you in the future.

 

Additional tasks for Customer Experience Senior Volunteers:

- Focus in customer service delivery and the user journey, from booking through to re-booking

- Create and manage the volunteer’s daily working rota

- Training and supporting in the operating of the site shop. Plan initial and ongoing training for all volunteers with an interest in customer service

- Support training and recruitment of a reception team with a focus on great customer service for all users.

- Recruitment and training for the team of  full-program leaders to provide additional responsibility for volunteers and great experiences to our customers

 

Option 2: What does an Activity Senior Volunteer do?

- Support other Scout Adventures locations as required.
- Act as a role model (even during none working hours) to inspire others and share your volunteering experience.

- Working towards your own personal objectives - developing new skills that will help you in the future.
 

Additional tasks for Activity Senior Volunteers:
- Focus on activities, including training and ongoing safety of sessions.
- Training and supporting the volunteers to instruct outdoor activities, with the support of the lead instructor
- Ensure relevant checks, processes and paperwork are maintained to meet external and internal accreditation standards - including management of equipment and PPE.
- Monitoring the safety and quality of activity sessions through regular observations.
- Act as Activity Manager to support the safe operation of the activities.

 

What training opportunities are there?

You'll complete the following training/qualifications, plus there may be more specific to your role:

- Scout Adventures Ground Belay Instructor
- Activity rescuer training and qualification
- Level 3 in Education and Training (or internal qualification)
- First Aid at Work qualification
- Basic Food Hygiene Level 2
- Health and Safety in the Workplace

What needs to be in the video on my application form?

Your video should last about at least 1 minute but no more than 2 minutes.

In the video:

- Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your story
- Tell us why you think being a senior would be good for you
- Tell us what you think the senior programme is and why it exists
- Tell us which bits of the programme you are looking forward to the most and why
- Tell us which of the two roles (Customer Experience, or Activities) you are applying for and why

When will the interviews be?

Interviews will be held week commencing 13th April 2026. We'll find a time and date that works for you.

What are the dates?

Broadstone Warren (January 2027 to January 2028)

Gilwell Park (September 2026 to September 2027 OR January 2027 to January 2028)

Great Tower (January 2027 to September 2027) 

Youlbury (January 2027 to January 2028)

What will I be provided with?

You will receive a weekly allowance, accommodation, food, training, support for visa and travel costs (if relevant), uniform, training, and socials.

Can I apply from the UK?

Yes, if you have completed our first year residential programme then you are welcome to apply!  Unlike volunteers who need a visa you do not need to have had a gap in your volunteering history of 12 months,

I'm an international volunteer - what are the Visa requirements?

You must either have a UK passport or other right to work in the UK or have not had a Tier 5 visa at any point within the past 12 months. EU Passport holders now also need a visa.

Are there other requirements?

You must have sufficient English language skills and at least one season working as a volunteer at any of our centers.

Where will I be working?

Our senior programme will operate across multiple centres, this decision will be based on skill set and development opportunities.
